PSJA ISD Cybersecurity students complete paid internship, gain real-world experience

PHARR – A group of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) students in the Cybersecurity Academy were recently recognized for completing a paid internship with the City of Pharr Connect, gaining real-world experience in the field of technology.

Through an ongoing partnership between PSJA ISD and the City of Pharr, the students worked alongside IT Professionals, applying the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to real projects in the community. The internship offered students practical, hands-on experience while also preparing them for future careers in the high-demand field of Cybersecurity and Information Technology.

In addition to their internship experience, each student is also enrolled in Dual Credit courses through PSJA ISD’s Early College Program in partnership with South Texas College, where they are actively working toward earning a Level 1 College certificate in Cyber Security, at no cost to their families.

“We are so proud of our students for their hard work and professionalism throughout this internship,” said PSJA CTE Director Adrianna Garcia. “Opportunities like these are truly life-changing. By working with industry partners like the City of Pharr, our students are not only gaining that real-world experience but also learning to give back to their communities as well as leave high school with college credits, certifications, and even job offers.”

PSJA Early College High School senior Orlando Robles shared how impactful the experience has been and how he is grateful to have been offered a job with Pharr Connect straight out of high school.

“I felt that, through this internship, I gained more knowledge out in the field working with Industry Professionals. I’ve learned so much shadowing the specialist, and it’s helped me feel more prepared and excited as I begin this new job with Pharr Connect.”

The PSJA Cyber Security program is just one of many programs at PSJA ISD that prepares students to be college and career-ready. With support from dedicated teachers, administrators, and community partners, students are gaining the tools and skills needed to succeed in the workforce and beyond.
