Thousands receive free medical services at Operation Border Health Preparedness hosted at PSJA ISD

SAN JUAN – Over 2,500 community members received free medical services during the 2024 Operation Border Health Preparedness (OBHP) hosted at PSJA Early College High School in San Juan from July 22-26, 2024.

Operation Border Health Preparedness is an annual exercise to help the community get ready for disasters. Thanks to this annual exercise, the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD Response Team has gained invaluable emergency preparedness experience over the years, allowing the district to open shelters when needed and serve as an approved COVID-19 vaccine provider during the pandemic.

This year, the PSJA Early College High School site was the only one in Hidalgo County. During OBHP, attendees received numerous free services including immunizations, medical exams, blood pressure checks, diabetes screenings, hearing exams, sports physicals, dental services, and vision exams.

“The hundreds of volunteers from Operation Border Health Preparedness have been essential in providing free medical, dental, and vision services to members of our community,” said PSJA ISD Director of Health Services Sulema Solis. “We thank all the volunteers and organizations who make it possible as well as our PSJA ISD School Board, Administration, and staff members for their support.”

OBPH is a joint collaborative effort between local, state, federal, and private partners, including PSJA ISD, Texas State Guard, Remote Area Medical, Hidalgo County Health Department, Hidalgo Safety Department, UTRGV, University of Incarnate Word, Texas A&M University, STVT, RGV College, UTRGV, Howard University, Texas State Health Services, and County Safety Division, to name a few.

Among the PSJA ISD departments that help during the event include Health Services, Police, Security, Communications, Child Nutrition, Transportation, Management of Information Systems, Maintenance/Custodial Departments, and PSJA ECHS Staff.
